While your 20s are generally considered a time of peak fertility, infertility can still occur, and it’s important to be aware of potential causes and when to seek help. Causes can include ovarian dysfunction, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), tubal issues, or male factor infertility. Here’s a breakdown of key things to know about infertility in your 20s, as recommended by NDTV

Common Causes in women:
• Ovarian dysfunction: Problems with ovulation or egg quality.
• Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): A hormonal disorder that can affect ovulation.
• Tubal issues: Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes.
• Endometriosis: A condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus.
• Uterine abnormalities: Structural problems with the uterus.
• Irregular menstrual cycles or ovulation problems

Common Causes in Men
Male infertility can stem from issues at three stages: pre-testicular, testicular, and post-testicular.
• Pre-testicular infertility arises from hormonal imbalances originating in the brain, affecting the production of hormones that regulate fertility. This can result in underdeveloped male characteristics.
• Testicular infertility is influenced by various factors, including lifestyle choices like diabetes, obesity, sedentary behavior, heat exposure, smoking, and alcohol consumption. It can also be caused by testicular trauma, infections, congenital abnormalities, vascular issues like varicocele, and genetic conditions such as Y chromosome microdeletion and Klinefelter’s syndrome, all of which impair sperm production.
• Post-testicular infertility occurs when sperm production is normal, but blockages in the ducts that transport sperm prevent them from reaching the urethra.

Lifestyle Factors:
• Maintain a healthy BMI: Being underweight or overweight can affect fertility.
• Eat a balanced diet: Focus on nutrients that support fertility.
• Limit alcohol and caffeine: Excessive consumption can negatively impact fertility.
• Avoid smoking: Smoking is detrimental to fertility.
• Manage stress: Chronic stress can affect reproductive hormones.

When to Seek Help:
• Under 35: If you’ve been trying to conceive for a year without success, consult a healthcare provider.
• 35 and older: Seek medical advice after 6 months of trying to conceive.
• If you have known risk factors for infertility, don’t wait

Unexplained Infertility:
Sometimes, the cause of infertility can’t be determined, which is referred to as “unexplained infertility”.

Early Intervention:
Consulting with a fertility specialist early can help determine the cause of infertility and explore treatment options.
