The human body uses 50 hormones to regulate different systems and bodily functions such as growth, metabolism and temperature regulation. Some of these also help regulate the reproductive system in both genders. These are known as fertility hormones. An irregular balance of fertility hormones in one or both partners can make conception and pregnancy difficult. In females, they regulate the development and release of eggs on almost a monthly basis. Hormonal imbalances are the leading cause of infertility in women, but are often treatable with lifestyle changes and medications.
On many occasions, an imbalance in fertility hormones is only realised when trying to conceive. But there are some commons signs and symptoms that are otherwise associated with a busy life or other health issues that can be indicators of a fertility hormone imbalance. Some of the signs of fertility hormone imbalance in women include mood swings, irregular periods, poor sleep, acne, brain fog, fatigue, headaches, vaginal dryness, and low sex drive. It is advised to seek medical attention should these symptoms be persistent or progressive.
Causes of fertility hormone imbalance range from natural life stages like menopause to conditions like PCOS or thyroid disorders. Diagnosing the imbalance requires blood tests and sometimes scans. Resolving these imbalances may involve managing stress, setting up a healthy diet, increased or improved sleep, or reducing caffeine/alcohol.
