In in vitro fertilisation (IVF), despite optimal conditions at embryo transfer where a high-quality embryo is placed into a well-prepared endometrium (inner uterus lining) of appropriate thickness, implantation does not always occur. This ongoing challenge in IVF has driven extensive research into methods that may enhance implantation and improve overall pregnancy outcomes.
One such intervention is commonly known as “embryo glue.” This term refers to hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance that plays an important role in the female reproductive tract. HA levels are known to increase in the uterus at the time of implantation, suggesting it has a biological role in supporting embryo attachment to the uterine lining. In addition to aiding implantation, HA is believed to help create a more receptive environment by reducing the likelihood of the embryo being rejected by the maternal immune system.
In standard IVF procedures, hyaluronic acid is already present in embryo culture media, but typically at low concentrations. During embryo transfer, however, HA can be used at higher concentrations, allowing the embryo to be transferred in a medium that more closely mimics the natural uterine environment at implantation.
Clinical evidence, supported by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), indicates that the use of embryo glue during embryo transfer is associated with improved implantation and pregnancy rates, particularly in fresh embryo transfer cycles.
