A frozen embryo transfer (FET) is commonly advised for several reasons such as:

  • You did not have a fresh embryo transfer during your IVF treatments as the lining of the uterus has not developed to a suitable stage.
  • You have good quality frozen embryos left over from previous IVF attempt(s). We only transfer one or a maximum of two embryos in your IVF treatment cycle.
  • In the very rare case, you are at risk of developing ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome (OHSS).

In selected cases Frozen Embryo Transfers (FET) are more likely to result in a live birth in comparison to a fresh transfer.

You will be advised what suits your circumstances best which will depend your hormone levels during stimulation and how well the uterine lining responds.

FET Procedure

STEP 01Pre-Treatment Appointment

Prior to starting treatment, you will have a pre-treatment appointment with the nursing team who will guide you through:
The consent forms
Your treatment protocol
How to administer the medication you will be required to take
Advise you of any potential side effects to the medication
Answer any questions you may have.

STEP 02Monitoring

You will be monitored using ultrasound scans. You may also require some additional hormone monitoring.

STEP 03Frozen Embryo Transfer

Your fertility specialist will determine the ideal day of the FET based on your monitoring.

You will be given instructions on how to prepare for the embryo transfer. The process is similar to having a pap smear test and only takes a few mins.

Many patients have concerns about how secure the embryo is. Rest assured, the embryo is secure within your uterus and will not fall out if you stand up or go to the bathroom.

STEP 04The Two Week Wait

Our team will be here to support you during this period.

They will give you ample instructions on the medications you’ll require during the two weeks. They will also advise you when to reach out to your fertility team, should a circumstance arise.

STEP 05The Pregnancy Test

A pregnancy and progesterone hormone blood test will be done fourteen (14) days after your embryo transfer.

Depending on your pregnancy results, you will be given advice on how to proceed.

You will be offered a debrief appointment to review and discuss your treatment. A summary of the details of treatment is availed to every patient.
